About Hélène

Hélène Asselbergs: abstract expressionist who enjoys the fusion of movement, music and art!

From an early age, movement, music and now art have been creative outlets for my life. Trained in classical ballet and classical piano at an early age, I grew up appreciating movement and music, first through performance, then teaching, and more recently composition.

My studies covered: music history with the Royal Conservatory of Music, with a focus on Romantic Composers, studying closely Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Schubert; art history, examining Picasso, Braque, and Monet; cultural and political theory and movements, at the University of Toronto, particularly the political forces behind what makes art worthy of representation in the galleries and museums we revere.

My twenties were about exploring classical and modern genres of movement, including the pleasure of choreographing and performing a modern ballet piece, alongside my sister, who also shares an affinity for and is a talented force in movement, music and art. I also started to focus on my interest in the energy I was reading around me and journeyed into Reiki.

In my early thirties, I turned to music composition and abstract expressionist painting, to contemplate and communicate creative ideas.

Abstract expressionist painting provides me with the platform to combine the creative efforts of painting and sculpting onto a canvas. I use a range of media in addition to acrylics, including sparkle dust, sculpting clay and at times, freshwater pearls, flax seeds, along with other media, to work with the energy I am feeling and wanting to transmit into an expression our eyes will contemplate. The process I use is also filled with many discussions with my husband, also a creative force, where we talk about depths, shapes and the emotional impact of my works.

Abstract expressionism is a wonderful platform for connecting people. It is a journey within and a discussion among new and old souls. Enjoy!
